Structured Speech Coach

The gap isn't vocabulary or fluency — it's structure and prosody. Can that be coached directly?

A communication coaching tool targeting non-native English speakers (specifically Indian professionals in US corporate environments) who struggle not with vocabulary or fluency, but with the structural and prosodic patterns of American professional speech — particularly thinking-before-speaking, pausing at meaningful boundaries, and matching the intonation "musicality" of American communication norms.

Problem statement

The hardest communication problems for fluent non-native speakers aren't accent or vocabulary — they're structural. Pausing at the wrong syntactic boundaries makes speech sound unorganized even when the ideas are good. Thinking out loud while speaking reads as rambling. Missing the prosodic "music" of American speech (rise-fall patterns, stress on key words, rhythmic pacing) creates a subtle but real disconnect with American listeners. Listening comprehension suffers because attention is split between formulating the next sentence and tracking what's being said.

These are hard to fix because:

  • Accent coaches focus on phonemes, not structure
  • Toastmasters addresses delivery, not real-time cognitive organization
  • No tool exists that specifically targets the "pause at the right time" and "structure before you speak" problems

ICP (who exactly has this problem)

Indian or South Asian professionals (VP level, senior IC) in US tech/B2B companies who are fluent in English but consistently get feedback that they're hard to follow in meetings, come across as rambling, or "could be more concise." Often high performers technically who plateau in communication-heavy roles (exec presence, sales, cross-functional leadership).

Secondary: Indian tech professionals in US companies, $150K+ roles, know they have a communication gap, willing to pay for something that works.

Market and TAM

  • ~5M Indian-born professionals in the US
  • ~$50B global language learning market, but communication coaching for professionals is a narrow premium segment
  • Executive coaching market: ~$15B, but coaches rarely address this specific structural problem
  • Direct comp: Yoodli ($30/mo), Speeko, Orai — none specifically solve the pause-structure problem

Alternatives (how people solve this today)

  • Toastmasters — public speaking practice, but no personalized AI feedback on structure
  • Yoodli — AI speech coach, focuses on filler words, pacing, eye contact (not cognitive structure)
  • Executive coaches — expensive ($300+/hr), often don't understand non-native speaker specific patterns
  • Self-study (YouTube, podcasts) — passive, no feedback loop
  • Nothing — most people just live with the gap

GTM angle

Personal use first. If it works for Angshuman, productize. Classic founder-as-ICP path.

Distribution angle if productized: LinkedIn targeting Indian tech professionals + "communication at work" angle. Content play: "Why your English is perfect but people still can't follow you" — addresses the exact shame/confusion this population feels.

How it works

MVP (personal use):

  1. Record yourself speaking (live or post-meeting)
  2. AI transcribes + analyzes: where did you pause? Were pauses at clause/idea boundaries or mid-thought?
  3. Scores structural coherence: did ideas come out in order? Did you complete thoughts before starting new ones?
  4. Prosody analysis: where should stress/intonation have shifted vs. where it did?
  5. Replay with annotated transcript — see the rant vs. the signal

Harder features (later):

  • Real-time earpiece coaching ("pause here", "finish that thought")
  • Shadow mode: record a fluent speaker saying the same content, show the prosodic diff
  • Structured thinking drills: given a topic, practice bottom-line-up-front framing before speaking

Riskiest assumption

That the pause-structure problem can be diagnosed reliably from audio alone (vs. needing video + context). Also: that practicing with an AI tool actually transfers to real meetings — behavioral change is hard.

Open questions

  • Is Yoodli's prosody analysis already good enough? What's the actual gap?
  • What's the minimal feedback loop that actually changes behavior (not just shows you data)?
  • Is the "thinking out loud" problem a speaking problem or a preparation/stress problem?
  • Could this be a mode in an existing tool vs. a standalone product?
