At some point, it’s no longer about how many features you ship. It’s about whether your work moves the business forward — and how you bring others along in the process.
Here’s a simple self-check to assess if you’re ready to level up:
1. Are you working on what matters most?
Are you prioritizing initiatives that move the needle – not just what’s urgent or visible? Can you tie your roadmap to clear business outcomes? Can you tie your next idea to the mental model and vision of your manager and their managers’?
2. Are you bringing people with you?
Product management is a team sport. Are you aligning cross-functional teams, earning trust, and creating clarity? Do stakeholders feel part of the journey so that they will support your initiative? At a senior position, how you get to your goal is equally important.
3. Are you operating with intention?
How you lead matters as much as what you lead. Are you known for thoughtful communication, reliable execution, and strategic focus? Or for being reactive and overloaded?
4. Are you leading, not just executing?
Have you influenced decisions beyond your scope? Are you setting direction or waiting for it?
If you’re doing the work but still not breaking through – shift your focus from more output to more impact and more collaboration. And from solo wins to shared goals.
